“Magna Grecia” is the name given to the southern part of Italy which was, in ancient times, colonised by the Greeks. After the colonization of the Egeo Sea, people of Greek civilization appeared in the southern part of Italy (Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Puglia) due to immigration of Greek people because of the commercial interests. This people founded a lot of cities such as Rhegion, Kymai,Metapontion and Teras. For the descendents of Greek people that lived in Italy, this was a period of important richness, cultural and artistic growth. The evolution of Greek civilization in literature, philosophy and art was often bigger than the same “Madrepatria”. The colonies in the south of Italy have been called “Magna Grecia”(Megàle Hellàs): a name that wanted to show a Greek community that has achieved high social, cultural and economic levels. The word Magna Grecia indicates the people and it’s civilization, more than the territorial and political entity.
